The American Civil War
  Ball's Bluff; 21 October 1861   scale: 1:25, start: 12 noon, dark: 7.30pm, 1 game turn = 30 minutes, 1 gun = 1stand

Brief background:
Union Colonel Baker was ordered to make a demonstration at Ball's Bluff in favour of a Union crossing downstream at Edward's Ferry. He failed to obtain sufficient vessels to effect a quick crossing however and his forward troops were surprised and annihilated by the waiting Confederates.

Historical outcome:
Overwhelming Confederate victory

The refight - Union victory:
Facing good rebel troops with poor Union soldiers and the demoralising effect of knowing that the Union men were annihilated in real life, the Union players chose to play a careful game, step back, narrow the field and trust that their muskets would slow the Confederate onslaught. From humble beginnings grew good things and half the Confed army was spent or in retreat by nightfall, for very few casualties on the Union side. A plan well executed, although the dice rolls didn't let the Union down when it mattered, with both Marius and Garrith destroying their opposition in devastating fashion.

Game notes:
- Units of more than 8 stands may be split into 2 sub-units, but must remain within 3" of each other. They suffer attrition as if they were 1 unit.
