The 1st Punic war
  The Battle of Tunis (or Bagradas) - 255BC   1 unit = 500 HI, 250 LH, 333 LMI & Cv, 165 LI

Background:
Within a short space of time and with typical dogged determination, Rome gained mastery of the seas. In 256, a massive Roman fleet of 330 ships defeated the Carthaginian fleet of 350 ships. Its objective achieved, Rome was now in a position to strike at Carthage itself. They invaded Africa but curtailed their expedition by calling back one of the two consuls, leaving the other to ravage the countryside with an understrength army. Consul Marcus Atilius Regulus was not a wealthy man and he probably hoped to gain glory and plunder by staying on. He defeated a Carthaginian army at the battle of Adys, fought in difficult terrain, where the Carthaginians could not put their elephants and superior cavalry to use. These managed to escape however, to play an important role in the next battle. The Roman victory meanwhile inspired a Numidian revolt against their harsh Carthaginian overlords who, in despair, decided to engage the services of a Spartan mercenary officer called Xanthippus. Regulus, in the hope of ending the war with one bold stroke before his consulship ended, offered terms of surrender to Carthage. But they were unrealistically harsh and Carthage prepared for the next battle. Xanthippus had an understanding of the use of elephants, gained from military practices in Greece and Asia, and had some time to train the Carthaginian army to become a more disciplined fighting force. And while the choice of ground at Adys had been a poor one by the Carthaginians, Regulus's choice to fight in an open plain in his haste to bring about the decisive battle, had all the trappings of a Roman disaster, outnumbered as he was by the Carthaginian cavalry and elephants.
