Battle of Pultusk
  26 Dec 1806   scale: 1:100, weather = snowstorm flurries, start 11am, dark:5pm, time scale: 1 game turn = 30 min

Background:
When Napoleon instructed Lannes to proceed to Pultusk and cross the Narew river, there to establish a bridgehead, Lannes (and Napoleon) did not expect any resistance of consequence. The French campaign had seemed unstoppable, and Napoleon was seeking the decisive engagement that would cripple the Russian army, and establish him as the undisputed military master of Europe. But instead of continuing his withdrawal as ordered, Bennigsen had decided to stand and offer battle, occupying a very strong position. The ensuing battle put the mettle of the French to the test, and although the Russian army disolved into a mob when it retreated from the battlefield later that night, the French had been fought to a standstill. It was a taste of things to come: the Russian army would not be brushed aside as it had been at Austerlitz.

  Game Notes:
Battle conditions: A snowstorm intermittently lashed the battlefield, and thaw had reduced the roads to mudbaths. Roll a D% each game turn for snowstorm flurry: a score of 80,90 or 100 indicates there is a snowstorm flurry. This ends on a score of 10 to 50%

The following factors apply to the battle:

- Movement on roads now equals movement in good going.
- Artillery moves at half speed. - Infantry reduces its movement by 25mm (1")
- Cavalry reduces its movement by 50mm (2")
- Visibility is reduced to 150mm (6") during snowstorm activity. Fire points are halved if firing beyond this visibility range.
- Artillery firing ball fires at half effect due to the soggy ground.

  Objective:
French: Pushing the Russians off the Mosin heights is a victory. A standoff constitutes a draw. (The Russians will interpret that differently) Otherwise, the army breaking point rule will determine the outcome.
Russian: To be pushed off the Mosin heights means defeat yet again. To fight the French to a standstill or worse constitutes a victory. Historical outcome: Both sides claimed victory, although the French held the battlefield at day's end.
