Combat of Mohrungen
  25 January 1807   scale: 1:50, weather = fine, start: 1pm,dark: 5pm,time scale: 1 game turn = 30 min

Background:
After the retreats from Czarnowo and the line of the Wkra river, the confrontations at Golymin and Pultusk and further retrograde movement of the Russian army, the old and unwilling Marshal Kamenskoi was finally relieved of his command and replaced by Bennigsen, at that time flush with his success at Pultusk, having fought Lannes to a standstill there. Napoleon had gone into winter quarters. Marshal Ney, finding the region his Corps was billeted in unable to sustain his men, embarked on a forward movement towards Konigsberg, in the hope of capturing that important town and adding the glory of that conquest to the comfort of his men. That movement however broke the line of the French positions and left his own Corps dangerously exposed. Bennigsen decided to take advantage of it. Embarking on a mid-winter offensive, Bennigsen reorganised the Russian army, moved to intercept and destroy Ney and drive the French as far back as the Vistula river. While Ney struggled back to avoid the attack, Marshal Bernadotte who was holding the French left and had also been left exposed by Ney's original forward movement, had decided to concentrate his forces closer to the rest of the French army and was marching to Mohrungen. At Mohrungen he ran into the advance guard of the Russian right wing under General Markov and decided to attack it in turn. Markov was repulsed, but Bernadotte was forced to disengage and retrace his steps when he heard the noise of a Russian cavalry raid on his baggage camp in his rear at Mohrungen. Ltnt Gnl Anrepp arrived late in the day and while Markov retreated, he led a reconnaissance towards the French lines, where he was shot dead.

Game Notes:
Bernadotte must halt all attacks at 5pm, due to the attack on his camp in his rear. He may however still defend his positions if the Russians keep fighting him. The Russian foot artillery may be allocated to a commander at the start of the game.

Objectives:
French: To inflict more stands' casualties on the Russians than suffering themselves, without being defeated, constitutes a victory for the French.
Russian: To inflict more stands casualties on the French than suffering themselves, without being defeated, constitutes a victory for the Russians.. Historical outcome: Although some sources claim a Russian victory, the Russians were forced to retreat. French victory
