Battle of Eylau
  8 February 1807   scale: 1:130, weather = intermittent snowstorms, start 6am, dark: 6pm, time scale: 1 game turn = 30 min

Background:
After a series of tenacious rearguard actions covering his retreat away from Napoleon's counterstroke, Bennigsen had decided to offer battle, and had deployed his army on the heights East of the town of Eylau. Napoleon had not achieved the required concentration of his corps, but was expecting the arrival of Ney and Bernadotte on his left flank. Unaware that his couriers had never reached the latter, Bernadotte would not show up, and Ney himself would arrive very late. Bennigsen fought a cautious battle, building his strategy around his vast artillery. Nevertheless, whenever the Russians were pressed by French attacks, they resorted to spirited counterattacks with the bayonet, as they had been wont to do throughout the campaign. The tactical initiatives were however taken by the French, and their tenacity would come close to carrying the day but for the timely arrival of Lestocq's Prussians, who nearly reversed the situation. Ney's arrival in turn diverted Bennigsen's attention. Incapable of effectively confronting this latest French threat, the Russo-Prussians withdrew to picket lines and eventually led their army away. Bennigsen decided to retreat towards the comfort of the depots of Konigsberg. The field was Napoleon's, and victory was claimed on that frail basis, but the French army was exhausted and in no state to destroy the Russian army. The winter campaign had shown that the Russians, while keen to spoil for a fight, did not have the wherewithal to outsmart and outmaneuver Napoleon, and that their responsibility was as much to avoid defeat as it was to gain victory. This ambivalent state of affairs would always struggle against the single- mindedness and strategic vision of Napoleon, who nevertheless irreversibly crippled his veteran army in the barren winterlandscape of Poland.

Game Notes:
The battle conditions are severely affected by the snowstorms that intermittently lashed the battlefield.: Roll a D% each game turn for snowstorm flurry: a score of 80, 90 or 100 indicates there is a snowstorm flurry. This ends on a score of 10 to 50%

The following factors apply to the battle:

- Visibility is reduced to 150mm (6") during snowstorm activity.
- Fire points are halved if firing beyond this visibility range.
- All musket fire suffers a -10 modifier for the turns of snowstorm.
- All charge distances are identical to normal movement distances, due to the deep snow.

The area to the North of Windmill Hill was interspersed with marshy brooks and deemed unsuitable for the use of cavalry. It is perhaps odd that all other waterfeatures were frozen solid and snowed under to the extent that divisions moved over them without being aware they were walking on ice, and that that area was not suitable for the maneuver of troops. We suggest that you intersperse that area with some difficult-going features.

Objectives:
French: Defeat the Russians to claim a French victory. If the French army is not in a position to defeat the Russians by the end of the day, but is undefeated itself, the game is a draw.
Russians: Defeat the French for a Russian victory. If the Russian army is not in a position to defeat the French by the end of the day, but is undefeated itself, the game is a draw.

Historical outcome:
Draw, although it was Bennigsen who showed least nerve and retreated from the field.
