The fight for Eylau
  7 February 1807   scale: 1:130, weather = fine, start 2pm, dark: 5.30pm, time scale: 1 game turn = 30 min

Background:
Hard pressed by Napoleon, Bennigsen had determined to offer battle on the slopes East of the small town of Eylau. He kept a substantial rearguard under Bagration to the West of Eulau, giving his army time to deploy. Napoleon directed that Bagration be destroyed, but the Russian fought back hard again and held off the French until the Russian heavy artillery column had cleared Eylau, whereafter Bagration conducted his retreat through Eylau himself. Bagration had covered the retreat of the Russian army steadfastly and exemplary. Murat on the other hand, taken aback by the losses to his cavalry the previous day at Hof, decided to let the infantry do the fighting this time, and failed to adequately support these with his cavalry. After the initial attacks on Bagration, a fierce fight broke out for Eylau itself, partly because some French disoriented troops had blundered into it, and partly (according to some) because Soult's troops desperately wanted the town for shelter and sustenance.

Game Notes:
All waterfeatures are frozen solid and rendered indistinguishable from the surrounding terrain by 3 feet of snow. In some cases this soft snow seems to have made progress difficult and in other cases had no effect at all. We have left it out as a factor. The Russian heavy artillery column moves by rolling for action points, unadjusted by a general's factors. After dark, Eylau will cast a glow of 200mm from its buildings, within which distance visibility is normal. Movement and fire can nevertheless be directed at that glow from beyond that distance. The main Russian army watched the rearguard action from the hills East of Eylau. Bennigsen resisted sending reinforcements beyond those that have been given earlier to ADC Davidov until Eylau was in French hands, by which time it was too late. We have left that part of the action out of this scenario. There is mention of Russian cuirassiers being at hand with Bagration, but no indication of which regiments. We have assumed they would be the ones that also fought at Hof.

Objectives:
French: destroy Bagration as per Napoleon's instruction constitutes achievement of objective - failed historically. To occupy Eylau in 12 turns constitutes the soldier's victory - achieved historically Russian: to hold the French until the heavy artillery has moved off-table unmolested and at least half Bagration's command has moved through Eylau, constitutes a draw. To prevent the French from occupying Eylau after 12 turns, is a victory.

Historical outcome:
French victory if only for wresting the town of Eylau from the Russians.
