Combat of Bergfried
  3 February 1807   scale: 1:30, weather = fine, start 3pm, dark: 5pm, time scale: 1 game turn = 20 min

Background:
At first surprised by the Russian advance, Napoleon quickly planned the counterstroke that would give him the opportunity to end the campaign with one decisive battle. The Russian army was drawn in, while orders were issued to the various French Corps to trap it and cut it off. Unfortunately for Napoleon, the officers carrying the plan to Bernadotte were all captured by Hussars and Cossacks, and Napoleon's scheme fell in the hands of Bennigsen, who gave orders for a general retreat, while preventing the French flanking forces from closing in. Moreover, Bernadotte was only appraised of Napoleon's plans several days later, and would miss the battle of Eylau as a result. The French had lost the advantage of surprise, and their advance was met with a stubborn Russian defence, as Bennigsen was waiting for his divisions to concentrate before continuing his withdrawal, a withdrawal that was not appreciated by the Russian soldiers. As one of them remarked, they first had to march hard to catch the French, only to march even harder to escape them once they found them. Bergfried lay on the path that would cut the Russians off from their line of retreat. Soult was tasked with crossing the river Alle at Bergfried and move on the Russian's rear. Part of the Russian troops under GM Kamenskoi (Junior - the son of Marshal Kamenskoi who was originally appointed Commander in Chief of the Russian army and was recently unceremoniously relieved of command and replaced by Bennigsen) was tasked with guarding the crossing, their obstinate nature being well suited for that task.

Game notes:
The French arrive from the designated sectors on their table edge, no dicing for arrival is needed. French Batteries may be allocated as desired. The Prussian artillery may be positioned as desired. The river and stream are frozen solid and covered with deep, soft snow. When crossing, roll per movement AP that any part is on the river/stream. An odd score causes disorder, and also causes artillery to be stuck for that movement AP. Their banks count as defendable.

Objective:
French: must cross the Alle, rout the Russians and occupy the Russian table edge to achieve victory. Russians: will be victorious if they prevent the French from crossing the Alle with more than half their troops. Any other result will be a draw.

Historical outcome:
Russian victory. Soult managed to occupy the Russian bank of the river and establish a bridgehead, but was never in a position to threaten the retreat of the Russian main army.
