Combat of Danzig
  15 May 1807   scale: 1:30, weather: fine, start: 5am, time scale: 1 game turn = 20 min

Background:
Napoleon ordered the siege of Danzig shortly after the battle of Eylau. The port city on the Baltic coast was extremely wealthy - full of stores and magazines - and of great strategic importance. Its occupation by Napoleon's troops would remove the threat it posed on his flank, and deliver its resources into his own hands. Marshal Lefebvre was tasked with its capture, aided by Napoleon's top engineer, Gnl Chasseloup-Laubat. General Count von Kalkreuth, the Danzig garrison commander, is in turn aided by the celebrated French engineer Bousmard, whose work on the science of siege warfare was also the work of reference for Chaseloup-Laubat. Of the two engineers, Bousmard would not survive the siege. Lefebvre slowly tightened his grip on the city over a period of two months, and was on the brink of launching a full-out assault, when on 11 May, a British fleet sailed to the mouth of the Vistula river and landed a Russian relief force under the command of General Kamenskoi. The Russian general, taken aback by theFrench positions, resolved to dig in, and only launched his attack 4 days later, by which time French reinforcements under General Oudinot had come up.

Game Notes:
The orders of battle are a bit sketchy. Each Russian musketeer battalion has one stand of battalion artillery.

Objective:
French: Defeat the Russian relief force and so speed up the capitulation of Danzig.
Russian: Leave the table on the Heubuden road with at least 50% of the original army's stands, excluding command stands, which will be the signal for a force from Danzig to sally forth, join up and so break through the French encirclement.

Historical outcome:
French victory
