Combat of Braunsberg
26 February 1807   scale: 1:30, weather = fine, but thaw made ground very slippery, start: ?, allow 12 game turns, time scale: 1 game turn = 20 min

Background:
As with the combat of Ostrolenka, the confident Russo-Prussians pressed the French hard, and were taken by surprise by the fierce French counters. The Prussian general von Ploetz had failed to join L'Estocq's Prussian Corps at Eylau. It was a blemish on his reputation and he probably felt compelled to redeem himself. He held the town of Braunsberg on the Passarge River, a crucial link with Danzig, and when the French attacked his outposts there, it is possible that he saw an opportunity to prove his mettle. He had orders to retreat to the East bank of the Passarge if pressed, but von Ploetz had other ideas.

Game Notes:
We start the game at the moment of Col Kazachkovsky's counter attacks against the French assaults on the Prussian picket line. The counter attacks were ordered by von Ploetz, but were ill-conceived and would result in the near-destruction of his division. The ground was apparently very slippery from the thaw (Wilson) and it rendered cavalry and artillery virtually useless. To simulate this condition, the following rules apply: Cavalry: all movement halved, including charge moves. Charge bonusses, overlaps, rear support don't apply. Artillery: all movement halved. All limbering and unlimbering costs an additional Action Point. Infantry: all movement reduced by 25mm (1"). The Prussian troops fought poorly and von Ploetz relied heavily on the Russian troops in his command. Col Kazachkovsky must execute 1 attack against Stangendorf village before he may consider withdrawing. Battalion artillery has been left out as it probably was impossible to use effectively in the weather conditions.

Objective:
French: Defeat the Russians.
Prussians: von Ploetz feels he must defeat the French. If victory slips from his grasp, he must withdraw 3/4 of his division over the Passarge for a draw. Any other outcome will be a defeat.

Historical outcome:
French victory
