Romano Chiusella
  26 May 1800   scale: 1:50, weather = fine, start: dawn; 5am, dark: 8pm, time scale: 1 game turn = 30 min

Background:
While Melas was preoccupied with Massena around Genoa, Napoleon's army crossed the Alps over the Great St Bernard Pass. Impractical for wheeled transport, all artillery was dismantled and dragged over the icy tracks on sledges. Lt Gnl Lannes led the advance guard and easily mopped up Austrian garrisons along the way. Fort Bard, overlooking and enfilading the pass, caused substantial delay to the main army, but eventually surrendered on June 2nd. It had nevertheless bought Melas 2 weeks during which to regain his balance and recover to some extent from his over-extended deployment, but he had no idea where the main French thrust was coming from, as a French division under Thurreau was also advancing on Turin from the southerly Mt. Cenis Pass. Lannes too, having bypassed Fort Bard and having ejected GM de Briey from Ivrea, was entering the Po Valley and marching directly to Turin, creating the impression that Napoleon's aim was the relief of Genoa. Without artillery, Napoleon at first forbade him to engage further Austrian forces, but recognising the need to maintain pressure on the Austrians, soon ordered him to continue his advance. In response, the Austrians established a defensive position on the Chiusella River near a village called Romano. They had left the wooden bridge intact but were otherwise well entrenched on the opposite bank. At 4am on 26 May, Lannes attacked the Austrian position, at first throwing a column against the bridge and thereafter sending men across the river to force the Austrian flanks.

Game notes:
Austrian cavalry, if any are present, operate in single line only (marching in column of march) All Austrian horse artillery is slow horse artillery - SHA

Terrain:
The ground is irregelar, full of rough undergrowth that made cavalry action difficult. Emerging from the foothills as the valley does, it is also strewn with boulders.

Objectives:
French: force the Chiusella River position and so prevent the Austrians from bottling up the French army as it breaks out into the broad Lombardy plain from where it has freedom to move as strategically necessary.
Austrian: contain the French.

Historical outcome:
French victory. Haddik pleaded with Melas to rush to his succour as Lombardy and Piedmont would doubtlessly be overrun.
