Monte Fascio
  7 April 1800   scale: 1:20, weather = fine, start: dawn; 6am, dark: 6pm, time scale: 1 game turn = 15 min

Background:
The Apennine passes, linking the Po Valley to the Riviera, Genoa and the southern invasion route to France, cleared of snow in April and Melas led 50 000 men to the coast. He had six weeks before Napoleon could advance across the Alps and he intended to destroy the bedraggled Armee d'Italie during that time and capture Genoa. He had left 20 000 of his 100 000 men in garrisons throughout Northern Italy and a further 30 000 to watch the Swiss Alps. Still, his 50 000 men were superior in numbers and equipment to his opponents. The Austrian soldiers were fed and properly furnished with uniforms and weapons, in contrast to the French troops who had been left to whither by the Directory after the disastrous campaigns of 1799. In contrast to the ageing Austrian generals, many of whom were veterans of the bygone era of the 7 Year's War, however, the French commanders were young and spirited and the French troops could still perform with bursts of excellence when inspired and well-led. The Austrian soldiers had little to animate them. The French were drawn up over 45km of coast: Suchet formed the left with 12 000 men, Soult and 10 000 men formed the centre and Massena held Genoa on the right with 6 000 men. It was easy work for Melas to strike the line in the centre and cut off Maseena in Genoa. Aiming to link up with his left wing again, Massena first decided to repulse the Austrians to the east of Genoa and to that effect ordered General de Division Miollis to strike at Gottesheim who was holding a position on Monte Fascio.

Game notes:
The Austrians were caught unawares. They must deploy all their units first and half of their troops must be deployed 400mm in. The French start 400 mm from them and move first with initiative for their entire army. All French generals may be allocated troops by the start of the battle. Austrian cavalry, if any are present, operate in single line only (marching in column of march) All units count as individual units and no distance restrictions between these apply. Terrain: The ground slopes up in irregelar fashion towards the Austrian position. It is interspersed with patches of rough and difficult going (3 of each not larger than 200mm across, none of which may touch each other)

Objective:
French: Drive Gottesheim back and inflict maximum damage.
Austrian: smother the French attack and in so doing keep Genoa's garrison bottled up in the town.

Historical outcome:
French victory. The French defeated the Austrians and captured 1400 of them.
