Battle of Molins de Rey
  21 December 1808   scale: 1:100, weather = fine, start: 7am, dark: 6pm, time scale: 1 game turn = 30 min

Background:
After his bold stroke at Cardedeu, St-Cyr marched into Barcelona in triumph. But another Spanish army lay behind the Llobregat river, only a few km beyond the outskirts of Barcelona, and while it was not in a position to harm the French army inside the town, it would prevent free movement and communication. General Reding had joined General Caldagues' Spanish troops with remnants from the battle of Cardedeu and had superceded him in command. But both were still answerable to the feeble Vives and sought the old General's approval to withdraw to the mountains to their rear, in case St-Cyr decided to attack. Despite Vives' indication that they were allowed to withdraw should they not consider themselves strong enough to hold their position, the generals chose to hold their ground. St-Cyr would not leave them much time to ponder their decision: at 5am on the 21st of December, his columns advanced towards the river in compact formations. Reding's army on the other hand was very strung out…

Game notes:
Indications of artillery differ. St-Cyr had none at Cardedeu but captured a number of Spanish guns. There were artillerymen in Barcelona and we have assumed also enough guns to produce a few batteries.

Objective:
French: soundly defeat the Spanish
Spanish: beat off the French attack

Historical outcome:
The French columns successfully rolled up the Spanish right wing and drove it onto its centre and left wing, But General Chabran failed to launch his men across the river at the crucial moment and most of the Spanish troops escaped into the mountains. Still, Barcelona's surroundings were cleared for many miles.
