Battle of Espinosa
  10,11 November 1808   scale: 1:80, weather = fine, start: 7am on 11 Nov; 1.30am on 10 Nov,, dark: 6pm, time scale: 1 game turn = 30 min

Background:
Now that Acevedo had been rescued, Blake once more retreated, and Marshal Victor took over the pursuit from Lefebvre Blake turned at Espinosa, encouraged by the strong defensive position the lay of the land offered him. His forces, increased by the infantry of the Division of Romana and Acevedo's Asturians, were seriously depleted by losses and desertion however, as well as the loss in the mountain passes of troops cut off by the movements of the French. His artillery and cavalry also was still in the rear. When Villatte's Division appeared on the field on the 10th, it immediately attacked de Romana's troops on the heights beyond the Trueba and got repulsed with heavy losses. The arrival of Victor with the rest of the army did not improve French fortune and the day ended without any gains. Their rash approach, possibly triggered by recent failures and Napoleon's rebuke, had resulted in fiasco and the next day the Marshal developed a proper and sound battle plan.

Game notes:
The river Trueba is fordable throughout. Its banks are defensible. If fighting the battle of the tenth, all French commanders are rash and have attack orders.

Objective:
French: defeat the Spanish army.
Spanish: defeat the French.

Historical outcome:
French victory. Only about half of Blake's starving and demoralised army reassembled at Reynossa.
