Upon the death of Hieron, his brother Thrasybulus took over the reins of tyranny in Syracuse. But he was a despot even more violent, murderous, covetous paranoid than his deceased brother and, within a year of his accession to the throne, faced a popular uprising. Despite having a large mercenary army (a stratagem typically employed by all tyrants the world over), Thrasybulus retreated to the suburbs of Achradina and Ortygia on the eastern side of Syracuse, where he had a small harbour that was separate from the main harbour. Being situated on an isthmus, these suburbs were moreover easily defended against attack from the mainland city. But when the siege dragged on, his allied contingents deserted him, and when he sortied with the navy that was still loyal to him against the insurgents' ships, he suffered a defeat that henceforth also drastically cut his seaward supply line. Running out of food, Thrasybulus decided to risk an overland breakout despite his lack of cavalry.

Game notes
Cavalry dismount as long spear. The suburb to the west of Achradina was poorly developed and the terrain should be open with a smattering of dwellings here and there, say 6 to 8 buildings. Thrasybulus' mercenaries have been downgraded to mediocre, because of their dim view of the prospect of a favourable outcome for them. The allied Sicilian General is reliable. The Siculi general may not be.

Deployment
Home troops typically take position on the right with allies lining up on the left of these. Cavalry as you see fit.

Historical note
The tilt of battle was decided by the thrust of spears only as the phalanxes managed to anchor themselves on buildings. The insurgents managed to pierce the mercenaries' line and the latter fled back to Achradina. Defeated on both land and sea, Thrasybulus negotiated his exile to the toe of Italy, in the town of Locri. His mercenaries were given the option to stay and most chose to do so. It proved a costly mistake. Stripped of their citizenship (another source states that they never had full participation in government, being resident aliens), they sought a predictably violent solution to their predicament. In 461, they retook Achradina and Ortygia, promptly lost their naval supply line, ran out of food, came out to fight, and were beaten again. Mercenaries were further involved in two other, smaller conflicts on the island. Beaten in both, the Sicilian 'Greeks eventually found '… peace, and the land they cultivated was fertile, so that the abundance of their 'harvests enabled them soon to increase their estates and to fill the land with slaves and domestic animals and every other accompaniment of prosperity.' (Diodorus)
