Background
The Greek city states spread westward in the 8th century BC, in search of new opportunities to settle and increase their economic power bases. From colonies around the foot of Italy, it wasn't long before settlers crossed the narrow strait to Sicily and founded communities there. During those early years also, a group of colonists from Corinth had settled on the eastern shore of Sicily and founded Syracuse. The ever combative Greeks drove the coastal inhabitants into the interior or subjugated those that stayed. They had no problems with the Phoenician trading posts towards the West of the island, as these merchants had little interest in the fertile farmlands of Sicily. But in keeping with traditions from the motherland, the aggressive and expansionist nature of the Greeks led to inevitable conflict. Control of the Sicilian strait was contested around 500BC by the tyrants of Italian Rhegion and Sicilian Gela, resulting in victory for Rhegion. Gela was founded by settlers from Rhodes and Crete around 690BC and it lost no time campaigning against the local tribes and looking for other lucrative conquests. Hippocrates, a ruthless tyrant, came to power in Gela in 498BC and promptly strenghtened his army. He avenged his brother's defeat by Rhegion and conquered most of the settlements on the Sicilian East Coast. Only Syracuse held out. Hippocrates refocused his efforts on Syracuse in 492BC. Crossing the Helorus river into Syracusan territory, he ravaged the countryside. The Syracusans promptly sent out their aristocratic horsemen, citizen hoplites and peasant psiloi. Hippocrates met them on open ground, favourable to his cavalry, near the Helorus river.

Game notes
The terrain will be a largely open area. 5% of the ground may be rough going.

Historical note
Gelan numbers and cavalry superiority told and the Syracusans were defeated. Gelon, a former member of the tyrant's bodyguard, commanded the cavalry during the battle. He took over the tyranny of Gela upon the death of Hippocrates, deposing the dead tyrant's sons. Syracuse had meanwhile thrown off the yoke of its aristocratic government and installed a democracy. The Syracusan aristocracy called on Gelon for help in 485BC and the tyrant reinstated them in Syracuse. However, he took the opportunity to take the throne of Syracuse for himself as its new tyrant.
