Ducetius of Menae, leader of the Siculi, had built on his success as an ally of Syracuse to bring most of the Siculi tribal factions under his leadership and begin campaigns of territorial reconquest against the Greeks. This quickly brought him in direct conflict with Akragas, which called upon its alliance with Syracuse to bring the upstart to heel. They mustered a sizeable force and marched to meet Ducetius, who realised that only a ruse would bring him success. Having gained knowledge of the lax camp procedures of the Greeks during his alliance days, he decided to attack their camp during the early hours of the morning.
 
     
 
Game notes
The Syracusans and Akragintians are based in separate camps when attacked. The terrain is 20% rough and 30% difficult, as the Greeks had marched into the mountainous heartland of the Siculi. The Syracusans and Akragintians are downgraded to account for their lack of preparedness. The hoplites didn’t have time to put all their gear on and are classed as Medium Infantry/no armour.
 
     
 
Deployment
All Greek troop units must be separated from each other at the start of the game, and face in 4 different directions in equal numbers.
 
     
 
Historical note
The Greeks were completely overrun and only spared total annihilation because the Siculi stopped their pursuit to loot their camp. General Bolcon saved himself, but was accused of treason upon his return to Syracuse, convicted and executed. Syracuse and Akragas mounted a fresh campaign the following year and were able to bring him to open battle and defeat him. Ducetius, knowing his disgruntled tribesmen would kill him, fled to Syracuse to throw himself on his enemy's mercy. Surprisingly, and without consulting their ally Akragas, the Syracusans let him go into exile at their mother city Corinth. It has been suggested that this act of mercy was not altogether unselfish, as Ducetius transferred all the towns he had ruled to Syracuse which levied tributes and garrisoned some of them, thus increasing its wealth and influence at one convenient stroke. Akragas was left out in the cold.
