Greek colonists had settled the islands of the eastern Aegean and the west coast of Anatolia as early as 1000BC, with Ionians from the vicinity of Athens being a dominant element. The dominance of their dialectwent on to identify all Greek settlers of the region as 'Ionians'.
When Cyrus conquered Lydia, which ruled the Anatolian coast in 546BC, he also took control of the Ionian colonies. While Persian ruleproved quite enlightened, The Ionian Greeks never lost sight of complete freedom to manage their affairs as they saw fit.
Cambyses succeeded Cyrus the Great and was in turn succeeded by Darius, who had won the scramble for the throne, only to find himself under immense pressure to prove his worth. In 513BC he embarked on a campaign of expansion against the Thracians and Skythians. The latter, steppe people living along and beyond the northern coast of the Black Sea, proved to formidable and nearly drew Darius's army into ruin. He swiftly retreated from his overstretched line of advance, and it was the Ionian Greeks who held open the bridge across the Danube despite several proposals from the Skythians to destroy it and leave the Persians stranded.
Thus, although they had acted with a sense of union towards their Persian overlord, they had also taken note of Darius's weakness, and with assistance from an ambitious Athens and Eretria, the Ionian Greek cities chose to combine in rebellion against the Persian King, a decision that would have extreme repercussions not only for the region, but of the future of Europe entire.
The Great King responded to the uprising by mobilising his regiments from Western Lydia, under three commanders, all of whom were married to daughters of his. The two armies marched and counter-marched until they finally came fac-to-face on the plain of the Greek city of Ephesos.

Illustration identifying the crucial edge of the Persians in battle: cavalry.
While the sparabara did not have the penetrating force of a hoplite phalanx, they were meant to hold the line by strength of morale until the Persian cavalry could envelop the enemy's flanks.
