Laches was reinforced in 425 with a second fleet from Athens, but suffered a sharp reverse at the hands of tenacious Locri, and went on to be involved in small actions here and there until the warring cities on Sicily decided for a general peace, all by then being quite convinced of Athens' ulterior motives to only serve itself. The fleet returned empty-handed to Athens, earning severe rebuke for failing to capture the island and under accusation of having taken bribes to leave. Things were relatively quiet on Sicily until 416BC, when a border dispute between Egesta and Selinus broke out into full-scale war from which Selinus emerged victorious. Egesta looked for allies in Syracuse and even sent an embassy to Carthage, but her pleas fell on deaf ears. She then found support from Leontini, as both were friends of Athens. They sent a joint delegation to Athens, painting yet again a picture of a powerful Syracuse that would unite Sicily in support of its Dorian brothers in Sparta. More importantly, they hoodwinked the Athenians into believing that Egesta was wealthy enough to pay for an Athenian expedition. Dazzled by ambition and greed, the Athenian assembly was easily convinced by the unscrupulous politician Alcibiades that they would be able to use the resources of a conquered Sicily to capture Carthage, Libya and Spain, or to conquer the Pelopponese, and The assembly voted in favour of the expedition. They appointed the reluctant and superstitious Nicias and the forceful and egocentric Alcibiades to lead the expedition, to be aided by the no-nonsense soldier Lamachus who would break any deadlock between the first two. In July 415, the best equipped Athenian fleet ever sailed out of the harbour. The Athenians' spirits dampened however when first all of the towns in Southern Italy refused them assistance and then when Egesta proved to have no financial support to offer whatsoever. The command structure by council immediately fractured. In the end, Nicias took the fleet on a circumnavigation of Sicily, trying to raise alliances and plundering for provisions. But on the fleet's return to Catane on the east coast of Sicily, the official trireme of Athens was waiting for Alcibiades. During his absence, Athens had charged him with plotting against the democracy. He escaped on the voyage home and defected to Sparta. All this meant that Nicias was in supreme command and he continued his tentative exploits. Sneered at by friend and foe alike, he finally landed his army south of Syracuse, having first lured the latter's army well away from the city. But instead of attacking the defenceless city, he built a fortified camp, by which time the Syracusan soldiers had returned and offered battle. After further procrastination, Nicias finally accepted and led half his army out onto the plain of the Anapus River, taking care to protect his flanks with natural features lest his troops were flanked by the numerous Syracusan cavalry.

Game notes
The bridge over the Anapus river is destroyed by the Athenians, but the Anapus remains fordable throughout. Cretan archers can give rear support to the Athenian hoplites in front. The Athenian allied general is reliable.

Historical outcome
The Athenian troops proved stouter than their commander and pushed through the phalanx of the brave Syracusans, who were forced to flee the battlefield. Their casualties were nevertheless relatively low as their cavalry had prevented the Athenians from breaking rank in full pursuit. The minor setback had not broken Syracusan spirits.
