Alfred the Great
  Cynuit 878AD   1 unit = 35 HI, 17 LH, 25 LMI or Cv, 13 LI

Background:
Around the Christmas celebrations of the winter of 877-878 AD, the Viking leader Guthrum, aided by disenchanted Saxon nobles, took control of Alfred's capital. Alfred managed to escape to the forests of Somerset, where he lived a life of hardship with a band of followers. Uncertain of support in his kingdom, he harassed Viking raiding parties and tried to maintain the spectre of resistance against the Danish invaders. Then, in 878, Ubba Ragnarsson, brother of Halfdan and Bagsecg and ally of Guthrum, landed in Wessex, having sailed from Wales. The door seemed wide open, but not all loyalty to Alfred had been extinguished. Aeldorman Odda of Devon was besieged in his hillfort, but against all expectations attacked the Vikings early at dawn on one still morning and won a famous victory.

Game notes:
- The Saxons started using larger shields at some stage and this is presumed to coincide with the adoption of the
shieldwall tactics. The Saxon shieldwall reduces the opponent's Melee Factor by 1. In addition, shieldwall troops do not suffer the extra casualty if they lose against a furious charge or are pushed back by Knights.
- Vikings may adopt shieldwall or go impetuous. As long as they adopt shieldwall, they don't behave impetuously. Once they go impetuous, they can not revert to shieldwall.
- The Vikings had brought their
Raven Banner. It was claimed that the Raven Banner's magical properties would always make it 'seem to clap the wings and do as if it would fly but towards the approach of mishap it would hang right down and not move'. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles state that the raven banner did not move that day as Odda rushed from his fortress and slew the Viking host. Ubba was known to be very superstitious and we may perhaps assume that the Saxons knew this, and knew of the properties of the raven banner. Their dawn raid was perhaps calculated to take place on a day when the sea was as flat as a mirror and not a blade of grass was bending in the wind. The Vikings have been downgraded as a result. Also, roll for each impetuous Viking unit. Impetuosity will be lost for the entire game on an odd score, due to the psychological effect of the limp Raven Banner and the Saxon surprise attack. However, lost impetuosity will be regained if the Raven banner starts flying again, all troops will improve 1 quality level and Ubba will become Supreme.
-
Wind: wind will pick up during the turn when a 1 is scored on a D6. Once it has picked up, it will increase to a hopeful breeze on a subsequent turn's score of 1 or 2. Once this is achieved, the wind will become an enthusiastic breeze on a subsequent turn's score of 1, 2 or 3. When at the beginning of a subsequent turn, the viking player scores a 1,2,3 or 4, the wind will turn into a full drakar's breath and the Raven Banner will fly.
-
Crucial: Odda needs to wrest the Raven banner from Ubba as soon as possible, before any wind should make it 'fly' again and rekindly the Vikings' spirit.
